Lometa ISD strongly believes that daily student attendance is fundamental to both individual and school success. In keeping with this core value, and in accordance with state directives, Lometa ISD has established a system of Truancy Prevention Measures and Attendance Incentives as outlined below.

Some important facts about Attendance, Absenteeism, and Truancy.

  • In Texas, except those who elect to home school or attend private school, primary and secondary students are subject to compulsory public school attendance.

  • Public schools are required to have plans in place to promote school attendance and discourage truancy.

  • Students are required to be "Present" for 90% of the time that a class meets in order to receive credit. This 90% rule is not affected by whether or not an absence is considered excused or unexcused. Students who fall under 90% will be required to complete truancy prevention and credit recovery measures as outlined in the plan below.

  • When a student has 3 unexcused absences in a 4 week period, the student must enter truancy prevention protocols.

  • When a student has 10 or more unexcused absences in a 6 month period, the student must be referred to municipal authorities within 10 days.

What is "Excused" or "Unexcused"?

  • All absences are considered "unexcused" until reclassified as "excused" by the principal or the principal's designee.

  • No absences will be re-classified as excused without appropriate documentation.

  • School districts are required to excuse some absences (with appropriate documentation), however most absences fall under the category of administrative discretion.

  • School districts are required to excuse absences for the following when appropriate documentation is presented:

    1. Religious Holy Days

    2. Required court appearances or government activities related to citizenship or activities related to participation as an election clerk.

    3. Absences due to an appointment with a health care professional for student or student's child if the student comes to school the day of the appointment, either before or after the appointment.

    4. Military enlistment and some situations regarding parent deployment for military service.

  • Lometa ISD may additionally excuse other types of absences with appropriate documentation.

    1. Two days for Juniors and Seniors for college visitation

    2. Appointments with a health care professional when students do not attend school on the same day. (Bring doctor note)

    3. Other activities excused by the principal or the principal's designee.

Most Unexcused Absences are routine, appropriate absences that are simply lacking documentation.
